The Gay Marriage discussion………

on February 6, 2013

I have recently had a conversation with someone I know well (or so I thought….), I am blogging about it because it really beggars belief and i’m mystified as to how people’s minds work so so differently. It went something like this…..

“So what do you think about this gay marriage malarky – do you think that it should be possible in church”

“yes I do”

“do you? Why?”

“because, if 2 people love each other, and want to declare their love for another, why should it matter if they are male or female – it should be equal rights for all”

“hmmmm. well, they can have a civil service already to do that. and anyway, what’s the point in them getting married – because getting married is for starting a family really isn’t it”

“oh really, you think getting married is for starting a family? I see. Interesting view. And I would disagree there as my view on marriage is different. So. Are you saying then that if this is what you believe the reason of marriage is, that you don’t agree that same sex couples should not be able to have a family?”

“Well, it’s not really right is it. The bible says its about Man and Woman, that is the natural way it should be and what men and women are designed for”

“OK so how about if 2 people of the same sex that love each other and have love to give, can offer love, a home, a family, security, to a child that doesn’t have any of that through circumstances, wouldn’t that be a given right for the child to experience, as well as the 2 people?”

To be honest, at this point of the conversation, I was feeling pissed off and losing the ability to maintain a sensible factual conversation, so I ended the conversation as it would have likely turned ugly.

We are all entitled to our opinions and to have our own views.  But what about when such a massive life decision is made for you, and you don’t have the equal opportunities because of who you might have fallen in love with.

I agree that best to quit the conversation whilst you are ahead in cases like this. Good for you! x
